Students take to the track – Spencer Hillas, Bronson McFarland and Camron Bye

Year 10 student, Coby Smart from Wodonga Senior Secondary College has been working to restore bikes for the cycling program at Belvoir Special School. Coby has been working on this project as part of his VCAL skills development with Brendan Washington from Washington Cycles Wodonga.

When Coby started this project, he hoped to learn some new skills but come out on the other side with so much more. “By completing this project I have developed a strong set of skills that will make me more employable once I graduate from the College”, said Coby.

The refurbished bikes were donated to the Belvoir Special School for use as part of the bike education program, aiming to get the students out and about. With Brendan and Coby delivering the bikes last Thursday, the students have already taken them out for a spin onto the purpose-built track at the school.

Physical Education teacher Ross Hayward from Belvoir Special School said ”The donated bikes will help the school teach the students the valuable skill of being able to ride a bike safely, as they get older this will help them gain some extra independence.”

“The skill of riding a bike allows the students to learn independently at their own pace and focus on only what they are doing.” Said Ross. “Especially whilst the weather is nice during terms one and four, when we like to get the students outdoors”.
